Wide Area Assessment Pilot Program Thousands of current and former DoD sites, comprising tens of millions of acres, are suspected of containing munitions. A typical site is thousands of acres; many exceed 10,000 acres. The Defense Science Board issued a series of recommendations including a campaign to delineate areas where munitions are and where they are not. To address this need, ESTCP initiated a congressionally mandated Wide Area Assessment (WAA) Pilot Program. Demonstrations at various sites are validating a comprehensive approach to WAA. The animation available here describes the WAA Pilot Program as well as illustrates the various technologies that contribute to the overall goals of the demonstrations. - Broadband Connection: Click here

More than 400 of these sites are suspected of containing munitions in the underwater environment. Many active and former military installations have ranges and training areas that include adjacent water environments such as ponds, lakes, rivers, estuaries, and coastal ocean areas. In fiscal year 2006, ESTCP was directed by Congress to conduct a demonstration to characterize UXO contamination impacting the Toussaint River area along the southern shore of Lake Erie in Ohio. The animation describes the assessment of munitions contamination at the Toussaint River as well as illustrates the various technologies utilized for the demonstration.
